#12 : Cracking the code: Starting a side hustle with a 9-5 job
Turn limited time into unlimited potential
👋 Hi everyone,
And welcome to our new builders.
If you're new here, I'm Victor, Ultrapreneur for 3 years on Twitter/X.
I build side businesses.
Sometimes I win, often I lose.
And I share my lessons and learnings in this newsletter.
ultrapreneur: long-distance entrepreneur
For the past few months I've been thinking about this…
You're at work, watching the clock tick closer to 5 PM, and you wonder if there's a way to escape the routine.
You'd like to start a side hustle, but between your job, your family, and everyday life, you can't seem to find the time, the skills, or even the right idea. I totally get it.
When I started building in public on Twitter three years ago, I was juggling a 9-to-5 startup job, two babies, and I had no idea where to begin.
But guess what?
After several failures, I managed to create my 1st profitable side hustle even though I didn't have an audience, but I had a plan (mind you, I'm not a millionaire).
And I'm here to show you how.
The struggle of finding time and ideas
Starting a side hustle is exciting, but finding the time, skills and ideas while juggling a full-time job can seem impossible.
All day long we dream of financial freedom, flexibility, and pursuing our passions, but the reality is often that you go home exhausted.
The idea of working on something else in the evenings or at weekends is daunting.
Plus, where do you start when you're not sure of your skills or what ideas might work?
It's like trying to build a sandcastle without any sand.
You know you want to create something, but the essential elements seem out of reach.
Why it's frustrating and what you might be missing
The frustration intensifies when you see others starting side hustles and achieving success.
You start to doubt yourself, thinking maybe it's just not meant to be.
This constant cycle of desire and discouragement can lead to a lack of motivation, making it even harder to take the first step.
You might find yourself feeling trapped, with no clear way out.
I remember a time when I felt like I was going round in circles, I didn't know where to start.
I mean, I'd start lots of projects, but I'd never finish them.
3 Simple steps to get started with your Side Hustle
But here's how I turned things around and started my first profitable side hustle while managing a 9-5 job and two young children.
🧠Find your focus:
Identify a small window of time each day dedicated to your side hustle. Even if it's just 15 minutes, it's a starting point. Focus on building momentum rather than trying to do everything at once. Think of it as planting a seed and nurturing it until it grows.
📚 Learn as you go:
You don't need to be an expert from day one. Start with something you're curious about and learn the skills along the way. There are countless resources online that can help you build the knowledge you need. Consider it a journey, not a sprint.
🧪Experiment with ideas:
You don't need a groundbreaking business idea to start. Try different things and see what sticks.
Sometimes the best ideas come from unexpected places.
For example, I've created a plan for this, BuildearnOS, a simple step-by-step plan to build up my side businesses quickly and see them through.
Today I'm sharing these thoughts with you because I'm just like you in the beginning.
I've decided to rebuild side hustles and turn them into startups.
